Zhang moved to Lijiang at the age of 39 to teach in the middle school at Huaping County.A year later，she was diagnosed with a severe illness but had no money to pay for the operation.However，thanks to a donation campaign by the local government and residents，she was able to get the necessary treatment.“I must live on.I will fight against my fate to see if I can survive，and I remember deeply in my heart that I must repay the love from those who helped me，” Zhang said during the interview. Driven by the idea of opening a free high school for girls，Zhang set out a six­year journey looking for funds and donations in 2002.In 2008，Zhang was finally able to realize her dream and the Huaping Senior High School for Girls was established.Zhang's devotion did not stop there: she also donated her wages，bonuses and gifts she had received for her to treat her own illness，to the school，in the hope of providing fair and quality education for the poorest children in the school.
