Warm-up
Exercise 1
Purpose: to help students look at a photo and discuss the setting (town or country)
· Before directing students to the photo, have them briefly discuss the differences between life in a town and life in the country. Ask“What do you see and do if you live in a town or in the country?”Draw a table on the board and note the key differences between the two settings. If you feel your students are ready to do the exercise, you may skip this step.
· Then direct students to the photo. Ask“Do you think the boy lives in a town or in the country?”.Read the Example, or have a student read it aloud. Have students give rea-I sons for their answers and share their ideas in pairs. Monitor, offering help as needed.
· Go over their answers, asking individual students al to say them aloud.
Answers
Students will likely say the boy lives in the country ( because of the hens, his casual clothing, and the setting with the shed and grassy field).
Exercise 2
Purpose: to help students skim a text to answer questions
· Direct students to the photos. Ask“What do you think this article is about?”Elicit an appropriate response, for example, It's about a boy on a farm. If you feel your students are ready to do the exercise, you may skip this step.
· Ask students to tell you what skimming is. Make sure students understand that skimming a text means that you read to get the overall idea, rather than reading for specific details. Say“Skim the text. Who wrote the article? What is it about?”Monitor as students read, offering help as needed.
· Go over the answers, asking students to say the answers aloud.
Answers
Jim Barnes, a boy from Oxford, England, wrote the article. It is about what his family does in daily life to try to save the planet.
