Exercise 6
Purpose: to help students match the verbs with the words to make verb phrases
· Write the following words on the board in two columns:
change our planet
save our lives
· Have students look at the first paragraph in the article and match the verbs with the words to make verb phrases ( save our planet, change our lives). Ask them to tell you what a verb phrase is in these cases. Example: a verb and its object.
· Direct students to the six verbs highlighted in the exercise. Note that these are all key verbs in this article about saving the planet. Have them find these verbs in the article and circle them. The verbs may appear more than once.Have individual students read the sentences with these verbs aloud. Then have them consider what the verb phrase is in each of these examples. Example: So to help save the planet and save money, our family has decided to recycle everything (help save the planet, save money, has decided to recycle everything).
· Direct students to the exercise. Say“Match the words to make as many verb phrases as possible”. Note: Ask students to make meaningful verb phrases (related to what has been discussed in the article).
· Go over the answers, asking students to say the sentences aloud.
