Warm-up
Exercise 1
Purpose: to help students express an opinion about discoveries
· Direct students to the headings in the reading. Read them aloud, pointing to the photos to make sure students understand meaning. Ask“What discovery do you think is the most interesting one?“Have students get into pairs or small groups to discuss. Monitor, as students talk, offering help as needed.
· Come together as a class, asking students to share their opinions.
Expansion; Try It Like This!
As an alternate approach, copy the photos from Student's Book. Show them to students before they see the reading. Ask students what the photos show. See what they know. Write all three discoveries on the board and ask students to tell you which photo shows which.

Purpose: to help students determine the main idea of a text
· Direct students to the text. Say“Read the text. Which discoveries does it discuss?“Monitor as students read, offering help as needed.
· Go over the answers, asking individual students to say the answers aloud.

Purpose: to help students write years in a table based on a text
· Direct students to the table. Read the events aloud, or have a student read them. Then direct students to the text. Say“Read the text again. When did these things happen? Write the correct years”. Monitor, offering help as needed. If students need support, have them work in pairs.
· Go over the answers, asking individual students to say the answers aloud. Encourage students to answer in complete sentences.
