Sun Yat-sen was born in Guangdong Province, China, in 1867. His parents were poor farmers but his brother was a successful businessman. His brother paid for Sun to go and study in Hawaii. He learnt English there. Sun Yat-sen was a very bright student and after finishing school he decided to go and study more to become a doctor in Hong Kong, China.

Dr Sun worried a lot about the people of China. For hundreds of years, most Chinese people had lived very difficult lives. Most of them were poor farmers. They worked hard all the time, but did not have much to show for it.

The owner of the land they farmed would always take nearly everything they grew. Dr Sun wanted to do something to improve the quality of life for these people. He knew that changes needed to be made.

To try and make changes, Dr Sun travelled all over the world and talked with people about the situation in China at that time. He had a very exciting life. Once , in London, he was kidnapped(绑架) and saved by his friends. He wrote a book in English about the experience. Later on, he married a woman called Song Qingling. Song also cared very much about the future of China. They worked together to help improve things.

After many years, Dr Sun and his supporters succeeded in improving many Chinese people’s lives. Sun Yat-sen died in March, 1925. In Guangzhou, a hall was built to remember him. It is called Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall. The hall was paid for by the people of Guangdong Province and by Chinese people from around the world.

Oscar Bloom was unhappy. It was his eighth birthday: All his friends were going to come over that evening. His little sister Samantha had made him the brightest, friendship-birthday bracelet. He had heard his dad whispering to his mom the day before about “picking up the little puppy,” and had a feeling that one of his presents might be a little dog that he had been wishing for ever since he was five.

So what was wrong?

Oscar was sad because there was one very, very, hugely important person who was missing today—his beloved Grandma Rose. Last year she fell ill and then one day she just wasn’t there.
