Warm-up
Exercise 1
Purpose: to help students talk about things they or their friends have invented
· Ask“Have you or your friends invented anything? If so, what was it?” Elicit appropriate responses. Encourage students to explain the invention, but don't worry about accuracy. Just let them express themselves.
Exercise 2
Purpose: to help students label photos
· Direct students to the photos. Ask“Do you know what these are?”See if students know any of the items. Then say“Match the photos with the names”Monitor, offering help as needed. If students need support, have them work in pairs.
· Go over the answers as a class, having individual students say them aloud. Encourage students to answer in complete sentences.

Exercise 3
Purpose: to help students understand cause and effect relationship and then complete a table based on a text
· Direct students to the Reading Help. Have students read it silently. Give them a few moments to think. Then ask a few questions to confirm comprehension, for example, “Is cause or effect the reason?” Elicit cause. Ask“What is the effect?”Elicit The thing that happens as a result of the cause. Write a few sentences on the board and ask students to identify first the cause (underlined below) and then the effect (boldfaced below) for each. Some sentences are: She studied hard so she would do well. We are going to the concert because we like the band. Since we finished early, we can go shopping. Let's play a game as we have nothing to do. Point out the word order in the sentences and how words like because, since and as are part of the clause that express the cause, while so is part of the clause that expresses the effect.
· Direct students to the table. Say“Read the text. Find the sentences from the table in the text”. Monitor as students read, offering
