Warm-up
Exercise 1
Purpose: to help students express opinions on new inventions
· Direct students to the photo. Ask“What are they doing?”Point out the title of the lesson if necessary. Elicit or provide They are having a discussion, or a debate, or read the caption. Ask“Do you think they agree with each other?”Elicit No. If you feel your students are ready, you may skip this step.
· Ask“What do you think of the inventions in the past ten years? Are they good or bad?”Have students get into pairs to discuss. Moni-tor, offering help as needed.
· Come together as a class, having students share their thoughts.
Listening
Exercise 2
Purpose: to help students identify opinions based on a listening
· Direct students to the photo again. Say“Andrew and Jenny are having a debate in English class. What do you think they are debating?”Elicit or provide The good and bad things about new inventions. If you feel your students are ready, you may skip this step.
· Say“Listen to the debate. What is Andrew's opinion? What is Jenny's opinion?”Monitor, offering help as needed. If students need support, have them work in pairs. If necessary, have students listen the first time for Andrew's opinion, and then play the recording again for them to listen for Jenny's opinion.
· After students have finished, say“Now listen again and check”. Play the recording again, pausing if necessary for students to check their answers.
· Go over the answers, asking individual students to say them aloud. Encourage students to answer in complete sentences, but to use their own words.

Answers will vary but should include the following:
Andrew's opinion: He supports the position that scientists need to invent more.
Jenny's opinion: She believes scientists should cut down on the number of new inventions.
