Grammar: Linking words. subordinating conjunctions (because, since, as) and a comparative phrase ( as well as)
Exercise 5
Purpose: to help students complete sentences with the correct linking words
· Direct students to the sentences. Read them aloud, or have a student read them. Say“Look back and find the sentences in the text”. If you feel your students are ready, r you may skip this step.
· Read the linking words aloud. Explain that because, since and as are conjunctions. Ask students to think of other conjunctions. Elicit and, but, or and so. For more advanced students, explain that those are coordinating conjunctions. To coordinate means to join two similar or complementary ideas. Because, since and as are subordinating conjunctions. To subordinate means to be dependant, or to need. Subordinating conjunctions also join ideas, but the clause (sentence) with the subordinating conjunction depends on the rest of the sentence for the meaning to be clear.
· Say“Now complete the sentences with because, since or as, according to the text”Monitor, offering help as needed. If students need support, have them work in pairs.
· Go over the answers, asking individual students to say them aloud.
· Ask“Is this sentence correct?”Read the first sentence in the grammar box, but use as instead. Elicit or provide Yes, it's correct. Then read the first sentence, but use since instead. Ask if it's correct. Elicit Yes. Say“Now complete the other two sentences, using the other two conjunctions. Are they correct?”Elicit Yes. Explain that the subordinating conjunetions because, since and as all express the same thing: a reason. They are interchangeable in sentences. If necessary, give some more examples of sentences with these subordinating conjunctions.
· Write these two sentences with since on the board: I've lived here since I was a child. I
