Exercise 3
Purpose: to help students complete sentences with after, before and when
· Direct students to the texts. Say“Circle the words after, before and when in the passages in Exercise 1”. Monitor as students circle the words in the passages, offering help as needed. When students have finished, ask“When we use the words after, before and when, what are we usually telling?”Elicit or provide a story. Explain that we use the adverbs after, before and when to relate events. We call these kinds of words time expressions. They introduce a clause, so we must have a noun and verb after them. Ask students to notice this in the texts. Revise the use of after. Point to the sentence in the bottom text, After that, I woke up. Ask“What happened first; I dreamt I fell or I woke up?”
