Exercise 1
Purpose: to help students understand a headline
· Direct students to the headline. Read it aloud, or have a student read it. Then direct students to the bulleted list. Read the information aloud, or have a student read it. Then ask "What do you think the girl in the picture did?"
· Ask some students to say their answers aloud. Have students scan the reading to check their answers.

Exercise 2
Purpose: to help students fill in a timeline based on a text
· Direct students to the timeline below the text. Point out that there are three events on the timeline, all having taken place the morning of the tsunami. Say“Read the text and fill in the timeline”. Monitor, offering help as needed. If students need support, have them work in pairs.
· Go over the answers, asking individual students to read the sentences aloud.

Purpose: to help students answer questions based on a text
· Direct students to the questions. Read them aloud, or have a student read them. Then say“Now read the text again and answer the questions”Monitor, offering help as needed. If students need support, have them work in pairs.
· Go over the answers, having students first compare their answers with a partner's. Then ask individual students to read the answers aloud. Encourage students to answer in complete sentences and to show you evidence in the text for their answers.
