Exercise 5
Purpose: to help students choose events from a special day
· Say“Look at your list of the day's events. Which events are the most interesting? Which are the funniest? Circle these”Monitor, offering help as needed.
· Have students get into pairs to share the events they chose. Encourage them to speak briefly about the events, and if anything new or interesting comes to mind, write it down with their notes.
Exercise 6
Purpose: to help students write paragraphs about a special day
· Write. Direct students to the list they made and revised. Say“Now write a few paragraphs about your day. Write the most interesting events. Use your notes and the writing in Exercise 1 to help you”. Monitor, offering help as needed. Be sure to give students enough time to write. If time is short in class, allow students to finish their paragraphs for home-work.
· Self-check. When students have finished writing their paragraphs, either give them a handout with the following checklist or write it on the board:
□I wrote about the most interesting events.
□I followed chronological, or time, order.
□I used all Key Words, Key Expressions and Vocabulary correctly.
□I double-checked spelling, grammar and punctuation.
Read the list aloud, making sure students understand the meaning. Say “Now read your writing. Can you check all the points on the list?” Monitor as students read their paragraphs, offering assistance on how they can improve them.
· Peer-review checklist. When students have finished doing the Self-check, have them swap papers with a partner. Alternatively, you may collect their papers and redistribute them to the class, having peer editing done anonymously. Either give each student a handout with the following checklist or write it on the board:
