Exercise 5
Purpose: to help students know how to use the words they have learned
· Direct students to the Vocabulary and read them aloud, or have a student read them. Have them find the words in the text and circle them. Ask them to tell you the sentences or clauses with the words, for example, the light in the dark rainy night made everyone feel safe. You may wish to have them work in pairs. When students have circled all the words in the reading, ask "What is the part of speech of dark?" Write the sentence from the text on the board. Point out that dark (as well as rainy) comes before the word night. Dark describes night, which is a noun. Words that describe nouns are adjectives. Continue going over the other vocabulary words, eliciting the part of speech and pointing out each word's placement in the sentence in the text ( earthquake = noun, enough = adjective; finally = adverb; journey= noun; leader = noun; shake = verb; support= verb). Go over the different forms of the words: tenses and persons for the verbs (shakes, shook, shaken, shaking; supports, supported , supporting ) and plurals for the nouns (earthquakes, journeys, leaders ). If you feel your students are ready, you may skip this step.
· Direct students to the sentences. Say "Complete the sentences with the correct form of the words". Monitor, offering help as needed. Have students work in pairs if they need support.
· Go over the answers, having individual students read the sentences aloud.
