Reading
Exercise 1
Purpose: to help students understand the content of a text
· Read and understand the sample text. Direct students to the photos. Ask “What teams can you see?”Elicit a football team and a musical group / (rock) band. If you feel your students are ready to do the exercise, you may skip this step.
· Say“Read Luke's writing about teams. Which team is NOT in the photos?”Monitor as students read the first time, offering assistance as needed. After students have finished reading, ask the question again and elicit the answer.
Answer
the school Maths Club
Exercise 2
Purpose: to help students identify a person's interests
· Direct students to the reading. Read the first sentence aloud. Ask“Does Luke like teams?”Elicit yes. If you feel your students are ready, you may skip this step.
· Say“Read Luke's writing again and underline the words and expressions that show his interests”. If necessary, direct students to the Key Expressions on page 21. Monitor, offering help as needed. If students need support, have them work in pairs.
· Go over the answers, first having students compare their answers with a partner's or another pair's. Then ask individual students to say the words and expressions aloud. Encourage students to rephrase Luke's preferences, not simply to read the reasons verbatim from the text. Accept answers that may not be in the Key Expressions if they make sense and show Luke's interests, for example, I have fun working with my friends ... It's exciting when we win a game. I'm in the school Maths Club. It's fun. I also play drums in a band. I just want to be with [my best friends].
