Note: Use this activity with more proficient students. Ask students what they know about da Vinci and the Mona Lisa. For example, where is it hanging? (the Louvre, in Paris )How big is it? (77 cm × 53 cm, or 30 in x 21 in) When did da Vinci finish it? (in 1517) Ask students to discuss the painting. Here are some questions for discussion: Why do you think the Mona Lisa is so famous?(You may wish to explain that it was the first painting exhibited to show a background, which changed the history of art forever. ) Do you think the model is smiling or frowning?(No one is sure!) This painting was considered scandalous for its time. Can you imagine why? (It was considered improper for a married woman to look directly at a man, in this case the painter, da Vinci, who was not her husband!) Do you know anything about the theft of the Mona Lisa? ( A Louvre employee, Vincenzo Peruggia, entered the building during regular hours, hid in a broom closet until the museum closed, and walked out with the painting hidden under his coat. He believed the Mona Lisa should be returned to Italy and be displayed in an Italian museum. The Mona Lisa was kept in his Peruggia's apartment for two years, until he grew impatient and tried to sell it to the directors of the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, when he was finally caught and jailed. The Mona Lisa was returned to the Louvre in 1913. But, in Italy, the people hailed Peruggia as a patriot and he served only six months in iail for the crime.)
