Warm-up
Exercise 1
Purpose: to help students recall some details about a story
· Ask“Can you remember the books we read about on page 18?”Either elicit the titles of the books, or say them aloud. Say“We are going to read an excerpt, or short passage, from one of those books, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer”. If you feel your students are ready, you may skip this step.
· Have students get into pairs. Ask“Who wrote the book? Who are the main characters? Discuss with your partner”. If necessary, allow students to refer back to page 18.
· Go over the answers, asking individual students to say them aloud. Encourage students to answer in complete sentences.
Answers
The author is Mark Twain. The main characters are Tom Sawyer, Huckleberry Finn and Aunt Polly.
Exercise 2
Purpose: to help students answer questions based on an illustration
· Direct students to the illustration in the reading. Say "Look at the picture. Which boy do you think Tom Sawyer is? What is he doing? Who is the other boy?" Have students get into pairs to discuss.
· Go over the answers, asking individual students to say them aloud.

Reading
Exercise 3
Purpose: to help students read and understand a text and then discuss their predictions about it
· Direct students to the reading. Say "Read the text. See if your prediction of the picture was correct". Monitor, offering help as needed.
· When students have finished, ask them to say their predictions. Encourage them to use complete sentences, explaining why they made their predictions.
