Exercise 7
Purpose: to help students identify the meaning of responses to question tags
· Play the listening dialogue, just the line“But you pay with 'bills', don't you? Yes.”Ask“When the teacher answers ’yes’, does she mean that you DO pay with bills or you DON'T pay with bills?” Elicit or provide She means you DO pay with bills. If you feel your students are ready, you may skip this step.
· Direct students to the dialogues. Say“Read the dialogues. What do the responses mean? Circle a or b". Monitor, offering help as need-ed. If students need support, have them work in pairs.
· Go over the answers. Have individual students read the answers aloud.

Purpose: to help students choose the correct question tags
· Revise the rules for using question tags. Write a statement with a question tag on the board, for example, You're good at question tags, aren't you? Ask “What verb tense should you use in the question tag?” Elicit The same as in the statement. Ask "Should you use the same verb in the question tag as in the statement, or a helping verb?" Elicit A helping verb. Ask “Should the question tag be affirmative or negative?” Elicit It should be affirmative if the statement is negative, and negative if the statement is affirmative. Ask“What's the word order for question tags?” Elicit Question order.
· Direct students to the statements with question tags. Say“Choose the correct question tag for each statement”. Monitor, offering help as needed. If students need support, have them work in pairs.
· Go over the answers, asking individual students to read the sentences aloud. Check students' intonation of the question tags.
