Learning About King Cobras
King cobras are large, dangerous snakes that live in parts of Asia. These snakes
often grow to be 18 feet long. This is the largest of all poisonous (有毒的) snakes in the
world. The cobra has loose skin on either side of its neck. When the snake is angry or
threatened, it spreads its long ribs and flattens (使变平) its neck. The skin (皮肤)stands
out and makes a hood.
King cobras mainly eat other snakes. The cobra has short fangs, but its poison is
very strong. Many people have died from being bitten by these snakes.
The king cobra is the only snake that makes a nest. The mother finds a place with many leaves. She pushes the leaves together. Then she lays about 40 eggs. She covers them with more leaves. Then she lies on top of the nest for about two months until the young hatch (孵化). The father also stays nearby.
The babies can take care of themselves as soon as they are born. They are about 20 inches long. Even young cobras are very dangerous.
As dangerous as they are, cobras are famous as the partners of snake charmers (婆蛇人). The hood creates
quite an amazing appearance. During the snake charmer's act, the cobra seems to be affected (受到影响) by the music.
In fact, as with all snakes, the cobra can't hear. Instead, it responds (回应) to visual clues(视觉线索). Many snake charmers get a feeling of safety from the fact that cobras can have a quite slow strike (攻击).
37. If you saw two king cobras lying on or near a pile of leaves, you might guess that
A. they are tired.
C. they are enjoying the sun.
38.What is true of king cobras?
A.They strike quickly.
C. Only the adult (成年的)snakes are dangerous. 39.What is this article mainly about?
A.what king cobras are like
C. what king cobras eat
B. they are hungry.

"That night, I saw a crested ibis fly across the sky. We ran after it at once and found four adult( 成 年 的 )
crested ibises and three young little birds in the woods,"Liu said.
That was the start of China's efforts (努力) to protect the birds. There are 4,400 crested ibises in China, making up(构成) most of the bird's global population (全球数量) of over 5,000.This year is the 40th anniversary
(周年纪念) of the bird's comeback.
Crested ibises are one of the oldest birds in the world. There were once lots of crested ibises in Asia. But in the 1960s, they began to disappear(消失) because of pollution and other human activities. That was why Liu and his
team set out to look for the birds. They spent three years searching in 14 provinces before making their big finding.
Chinese scientists have worked hard to study and protect the birds since then. They have asked people not to hunt the birds, cut down trees, or use fertilizers(化肥) in the places where the birds live. They helped the birds have more babies. Some crested ibises were also sent to Japan and South Korea. All of these countries work together to protect the birds.
40.What helped Liu find the crested ibises?
A. He found three young birds in a forest. | B.He heard the sound of crested ibises. |
C. He saw a crested ibis fly across the sky. | D. He ran into adult birds in the woods. |
41.Which picture shows how the number of the ibises has changed?
