Warm-up
Exercise 1
Purpose: to help students match words that have the same meaning
· Have pictures to represent the words: mate/ friend, cookie/ biscuit, gas/ petrol, and sneakers/trainers. Hold each up and ask,“What's this?”See which word students use to describe each picture. Ask“What are the differences between the sets of words?”Elicit or provide One word is British English and the other word is American English.
· Direct students to the words. Say“Read the words. Match each word with the same meaning”. Monitor, offering help as needed. You may wish to have students work in pairs.
· Go over the answers, asking individual students to say them aloud. Ask students to tell you which words are British English and which are American English.

Purpose: to help students talk about differences between British English and American English
· Ask“Do you know any other differences be. tween British English and American English?”If students need help, write the following words on the board: neighbour, practise, flavour. Ask students if they know the way to spell these words in American English (neighbor, practice, favor). Write the fol. lowing sentences on the board: He's got a car.
