Section B

Could You Please…?

When you visit a foreign country, it is important to know how  1.          (ask) for help politely. 2,      example, you may ask “Where are the restrooms?” or “Could you please tell me where the 3.          (洗手间)are?” These are 4.        (类似的)requests for directions. Both are 5.         (正确的), but 6.     first one sounds less polite. That is because it is a very direct question.

It is not enough7.       just ask a question correctly. We also need to learn how to be polite when we ask 8.           help.

Good speakers change the way they speak in different 9.          (situation). The expressions they use might depend 10.        whom they are speaking to or how well they know each 11.         . It is all right to ask your classmates direct questions because you know page number 0

them 12.        (good). However, if you say to your teacher, “When is the school trip?”, this might sound 13.          (polite).

But if you say, “Excuse me, Mr. West. Do you know when the school trip is?”, this will sound much more polite.

Usually polite questions are 14.       (long). They include expressions such as “Could you please…?” or “May I ask…?” It sounds more polite to say, “Peter, could you please tell me your e-mail address?” than “Peter, tell me your e-mail address.”

Sometimes we even need to spend time 15.          (lead)into a request. For example, we might first say to a 16.           (陌生人), “Excuse me, I wonder if you can help me” or “I’m sorry to trouble you, but…” before 17.     (ask) for help.

It might seem more difficult to speak politely than directly. However, it is important to learn how to use the right language in different situations. This will help you communicate better 18.         other people.

Some people have a very poor sense of direction(方向感). Unluckily, I am one of them. I have visited a place many times but I may still get lost there the next time.

When I was a little girl, I never dared to ask strangers the way. So I used to walk around in circles and hope that by chance I would get to the place I was going to.

Now, I am no longer too shy to ask people for directions but I often receive helpless or even wrong information. So I try to avoid giving people wrong information. If anyone asks me the way somewhere, I would say, "Sorry, I am a stranger here."

Once on my way to work, I was stopped by a man. He asked me if I could tell him the way to the Friendship Building. I gave him my usual reply. But just as I walked on only a few steps, I realized that he had asked the way to my office building. However, I had no time to turn back and look for him. I was rushing to meet someone at my office and I didn't want to keep him waiting.

When I just got to my office, the secretary showed in the man who had asked me for directions. Imagine how embarrassed I was and how surprised he was when we saw each other at the first sight!
