★alibi      n.[u] 不在犯罪现场，不在场证明，当时不在场的申辩

eg. prove an alibi                               证明不在场

  = establish an alibi = set up an alibi

    They all had alibis for that night.          他们都有那晚不在场的证明。

    

★commit      v. 犯（罪、错）

(1)    犯（罪），做（错）

eg. He must have committed a crime.              他一定是犯罪了。

A robbery was committed near here.           附近发生一起抢劫案。

commit suicide                               自杀

commit murder                                杀人

commit a blunder                             犯了大错

(2)    把…委托于…，交付，投…，投入

eg. They committed the patient to the mental hospital.

他们把病人送进了精神病院。

He was committed to prison.                  他被关进了大牢。

commit on sth.                               承诺…，约定…

= commit to do sth.                         

= commit to doing sth.

eg. She didn’t want to commit herself on that matter.

她不愿对那件事情做任何承诺。

The government committed itself to reduce taxes.

  = The government committed itself to reducing taxes.

    政府承诺缩减税款。

He committed himself to the antiwar movement.

他献身于反战运动。

 

★inspector   n. 探长

(1)    视察员

eg. an inspector of factories                    工厂的视察员

(2)    探长

(1)    v. 详细调查，检查

eg. You should inspect the car well before you buy it.

买车之前一定要检查好。

(2)    v. 视察

eg. The Minister of Education inspected our school.

教育部长视察了我们学校。

They made an inspection of the factory.      他们视察工厂。

 

★employer   n. 雇主

eg. full employment                              充分就业

We are in the employment of the company.     我们就职于这家公司。

(1)    v. 聘请，雇用

eg. employ sb. as                                雇用某人做某事

The firm employs two interpreters.           这个公司雇了2个翻译。

He employed the girl as a typist.            他雇用这个女孩做打字员。

(2)    v. 使用（物，能力）（use)

eg. You should employ your funds more wisely.    你应该更明智地使用你的资金。

employ English as a common language         将英语作为通用语言

employ oneself in = be employed in          从事…，忙于…

She was busily employed in preparing dinner for five guests.

她忙于为5个客人做饭。
