Lesson52 A pretty carpet

We have just moved into a new house and I have been working hard all morning. I have been trying to get my new room in order. This has not been easy because I own over a thousand books. To make matters worse, the room is rather small, so I have temporarily put my books on the floor. At the moment, they cover every inch of floor space and I actually have to walk on them to get in or out of the room. A short while ago, my sister helped me to carry one of my old bookcases up the stairs. She went into my room and got a big surprise when she saw all those books on the floor. 'This is the prettiest carpet I have ever seen,' she said. She gazed at it for some time then added, 'You don't need bookcases at all. You can sit here in your spare time and read the carpet!'

1 temporarily['tempərərili] ad.暂时地

2 inch [intʃ] n.英寸(度量单位)

3 space [speis] n.空间

4 actually ['æktʃuəli] ad.实际上

★inch    n.英寸(度量单位)

1 inch=2.54 centimeters

长度单位还有哪些呢？

foot            1 foot= 12 inches

yard           1 yard= 3 feet

Give him an inch and he will take a yard.

inch by inch 渐渐、逐渐;一步一步

They climbed the mountain inch by inch.

★actually  adv. 实际上

1.实际上：actually=in fact

She looks young, but she’s actually 50.

2.实在地；确实

Did you actually see the UFO?

3.actual  adj. 实际的

in actual life在实际生活中

 I'm not a student. I'm a teacher, actually.

我不是一名学生。事实上，我是一名老师。

The son is actually the one who runs the show.

实际上儿子是操纵一切的人。

★temporarily  adv. 暂时地

1.You might only need it temporarily.

可能你只是暂时的需要它。

2.temporary  /‘tempərəri/ adj.暂时的

Our temporary difficulties will soon be solved. 

我们的暂时困难将很快得到解决。

3.temporary workers临时工

🌻Part 3: Notes on the text

★We have just moved into a new house and I have been working hard all morning.

前者强调动作发生的事实或结果→现在完成时

后者强调动作一直持续发生的过程→现在完成进行时

现在完成进行时用来强调动作在某一段时间内一直在进行，而且动作有现在的结果。现在完成时表示在漫长地时间段，过去发生的, 还一定要对现在产生影响；在过去发生的动作, 一直延续到现在，此时动词一定是延续性动词 

It has rained for half day. 

It has been raining. 

★I have been trying to get my new room in order. 

1.get sth. in order       使……有秩序，把……整理好(get 使役动词) 

Things have to be put in order here before they come.

在他们来之前这一切都要整理好。

It didn’t take him long to put the car in order.

他没花多久就把车修好了。

2.in order     整齐，井然有序，有秩序, 有次序 

Get/Put everything in order before you leave the room.  

★This has not been easy because I own over a thousand books. 

own：

① vt. 拥有 

I own over a thousand books. 

② vt. &vi. 承认(own to doing sth. /that)

He owned to stealing the wallet. 

He owned (that) he had made a mistake. 

③ adj. 自己的 

He lives in his own house. 

I saw the whole accident with my own eyes.
