Bartholmeu Dias was a famous explorer in the 15th century. In 1487, the king ordered him to open up a new trade route to India. In 1488, other members on the ship were too tired to go farther. So although they
hadn’t reached India, they had to turn back. During the voyage, Dias discovered the southernmost tip of Africa—the Cape of Good Hope. He was the first man known to do so. His discovery allowed Europe to trade with Asia directly.
