Ernest Hemingway (1899-1961), an American writer of novels and short stories, is well thought of for his unique writing style. He is extremely good at describing the adventures of tough men who he believes “can be destroyed but not defeated".
The Old Man and the Sea tells the story of a fisherman named Santiago. After coming in empty-handed for eighty-four days, Santiago attempts to catch a huge fish.

学生活动:阅读文章,回答问题
1. What does the passage talk about?
2. Did the old man nearly catch the fish? How do you know?
3. When the old man saw the fish turned a little on his side (line 9), what did he say? And in what emotion did he say that?
答案:1. It describes the struggle between the old man and the fish. The old man struggled to conquer the fish while the fish struggled to escape.
2. Yes, he did. In line 9 it says “For just a moment the fish turned a little on his side”. And in line 25 it tells us “On the next turn, he nearly had him.”
3. "I moved him," the old man said. “I moved him then.” He was excited to see that he was able to pull the fish.

Anaylze the sentences
1. His mouth was too dry to speak but he could not reach for the water now.他的嘴于得说不出话,但他现在不能伸手拿水来喝。
"too...to...结构"
(1)too...to...结构意为“太···.·· 以致不能····.·”,此结构中,too后跟形容词或副词,to后跟动词原形,可转换为so/such...that结构。该结构还可扩展为 too...for sb to...
(2)too...to...结构并不都表示否定,下列情况中的 too..to...表示肯定意义:
当too后是表示心情或描述性的形容词或副词,如anxious, glad, ready,eager, easy, nice, willing, happy, pleased, surprised, kind, delighted 等时,too有 very 的含义,且 too前通常有 only,just 等修饰,表示肯定意义。
在not, never 等否定词后的 too...to...结构,表示肯定含义。
too...not to do...结构,表示“太......而不会不.....”是双重否定表示肯定。
