Coming-of-Age Day
Coming-of-Age Day is celebrated on the second Monday in January. In Japan, a person legally becomes an adult at the age of twenty. This current celebration of adulthood is said to have derived from a coming-of-age festival that started just after the Second World War. It was held first in Saitama Prefecture with the goal of giving hope and courage to young people in the post-war society.
Rio Carnival
The Rio Carnival is perhaps the biggest draw for tourists to visit Brazil and for very good reasons! Forty days before Easter, the country comes to a stop as people go to the streets wearing flamboyant costumes, drink and dance each night away for this week-long hedonistic party.

How do people usually celebrate these festivals?
Listening tips
To listen for a relationship, you need to pay attention to how people talk to each other (e.g. friends usually call each other by first names) and some particular questions in the conversation (e.g. “Could I have the bill, please?” tell us that the speaker is a customer in a restaurant).
Listen and write the order of the conversations next to the names of the festivals above. Then match each conversation with the relationship between the speakers below.
