XB3 Unit 3 War and peace Using language Grammar Subject-verb agreement (1) 集体名词作主语的主谓一致问题 主谓一致的意义 谓语动词与主语必须在人称和数上保持一 致，这叫做主谓一致。 集体名词作主语时主谓一致的应用主要有以下几种情况: (1)有些集体名词表示复数含义，作主语时谓语通常用复数形式，如：people，police，cattle(牛), poultry(家禽), military等。 ①The police are(be)looking for the lost child. 警察正在寻找那个失踪的孩子。 ②The cattle are (be)grazing at the foot of the hill. 牛群正在山脚下吃草 ③The people love their country deeply. 人们深爱着他们的国家。 注：people表示“民族”时有单复数形式，但表示“人，人民”时为复数意义，不可加S。 (2)集体名词通常只用作不可数名词，表示单数意义，用作主语时，谓语动词用单数形式，如：clothing, poetry, luggage, furniture, machinery, scenery, jewellery, equipment等 ①The clothing is (be) bright and attractive. 鲜艳的衣服会引人注意。 ②All the furniture is (be)crafted from natural materials. 所有的家具均采用天然材料精心制作而成。 （3）表示“时间、重量、长度、价值”等的名词的复数作主语时，谓语动词通常用单数形式，这是由于作主语的名词在概念上是一个整体。 ①Forty minutes is enough for the work. 四十分钟足够做这项工作了。 ②Ten miles is nothing to him. 十英里对他来说不是事。 Four thousand dollars is (be)more than she can afford. Three days is (be)too short a time for me to do it. （4）主语是 clothes，compasses，goods，glasses，trousers，scissors，shoes，gloves等名词时，谓语动词常用复数形式。但如果主语是“a kind of/a type of/a pair of/a piece of等单位词修饰名词时，单位词的单复数决定谓语动词的单复数。 ①My glasses were (be)broken while playing football yesterday. ②A pair of shoes is (be)lying here. 这里有一双鞋。 ③These kinds of glasses are (be)popular. 这些种类的眼镜很流行。 （5）“定冠词the+形容词”表示某一类人时，谓语动词用复数。 ①Even the wise are not always free from error. 即使智者也难免犯错。 （6）当主语为physics, mathematics, economics, politics等，以及用作书名、剧名、地名、国名、报纸名、组织机构等的复数名词作主语时，谓语动词用单数形式。 The New York Times still has (have) a wide circulation(发行量). The United Nations is (be)an international organization. （7）主语是means，works(工厂)，sheep，fish，deer，Chinese，Japanese，species等单复同形的名词时，谓语动词要在意义上跟主语保持一致。 ① A new paper works is to be located near the river. 一家新造纸厂拟建于河边。 ②Some new paper works are to be located near the river. 一些新造纸厂拟建于河边。 （8）集体名词即可以强调整体又可以强调个体成员，如：family，class，team，group，crowd，audience，army，committee，enemy，government等。若视为整体，谓语动词则用单数形式；若强调集体中的个体成员，则谓语动词
