Do you know where the photo was taken?
What are people doing in the photo?
Which languages do you think are officially used here?
The photo is of a UN General Assembly meeting. The UN was founded in 1945, shortly after World War II, and as of 2017, it has 193 member states. It works to maintain international peace, promote development, provide assistance to people in need, and protect human rights. More recently, it has joined the fight against climate change. It has its headquarters in New York.
Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the six official and working languages of the General Assembly, its committees and its subcommittees. During a General Assembly meeting, speeches made in any of the six languages of the General Assembly are interpreted into the other five languages.
What do you know about any foreign languages?
