Cultural notes
The novel "The Old Man and the Sea" is based on real people and true events. After the end of World War One, Hemingway moved to Cuba(古巴) and met the old man Fisherman Gorio Fuentes. In 1930, Hemingway was rescued by Fuentes after his ship was wrecked in a storm. From then on, the two men forged profound friendship, often with fishing. In 1936, Fuentes went far out to sea and caught a big fish, but because the fish was too big, it was dragged at sea for a long time, and the result was tha it was attacked by a shark on the way home, only the skeleton was left when he returned. Hemingway was deeply touched by this incident and realized that it would be good material for a novel. In 1950, he wrote a novel on it, which won him the Pulitzer Prize in 1953 and in 1954 won him the Nobel Prize for Literature.
