1. What examples of bionics can you think of ?
2. What is your understanding of the title?
Nature’s forms and functions have inspired us to imitate it and develop materials and technologies that improve our lives.
Section 1 (Para. 1)
Bionics is a science inspired by nature with a long history.
Scientists generally go through various stages to apply it successfully.
Scientists have come up with many novel applications inspired by nature and they will develop more in the future.
The field of bionics has enabled us to realize the importance of nature.
Section 2 (Para. 2)
Section 3 (Paras. 3–5)
Section 4 (Para. 6)
Reading
Read Paragraphs 1–2 and answer the following questions.
1. What is the definition of bionics?
2. When does the term “bionics” date from?
3. Why do scientists often need to go to great lengths to effectively combine nature and innovation?
Bionics is a science of taking inspiration from nature, which effectively
combines nature and innovation to improve our lives.
It officially dates back to 1958, but the practice is centuries old, dating back as far as 2,500 years.
Because the process of the study involves four stages, which may have to be performed several times and it may take scientists years of trial and error to perfect the product.

Taking inspiration from plants
One idea grew from observing (1) ___________________________. The seeds grow at the “golden angle” of 137.5°, ensuring all of them receive sunlight. (2) ________________________, the sunflower’s face also follows the sun’s path.
Solar mirrors are arranged to (3) ______________________ and positioned at the same “golden angle”. The mirrors are also programmed to follow the sun.
The solar power plant is eco-friendly, requiring less land to build on and less energy to operate
