Two men have partnered together to create Zero Carbon Food on an underground farm that grows leafy greens while causing zero damage to the environment.
The farm is actually in a network of 430metrelong tunnels 33 metres under Clapham, London. The tunnels were originally used as a bomb shelter in World War Ⅱ and could fit up to 8,000 people.
The little light that is in the tunnels comes from LED lights hanging above patches of various vegetables that Steven Dring and Richard Ballard are growing.
Their task is to grow leafy greens in underground spaces for people while leaving a very small environmental footprint. Zero Carbon Food uses 70% less water and can produce any leafy vegetable yearround for the growing population of London. They also don't need to use pesticides because there are no insects in the tunnels.
The idea of an underground farm came from a conversation about urban farming and the price of land. At the time, Ballard was working on a film about the earth's shrinking natural resources and experiments in more sustainable energy forms around the world. The two agreed that there was a lot of talk about urban farming but no immediate action, so they decided to make it happen themselves.
It turned out that buying farming land in London is not cheap, so the pair leased the underground space from transport for London after doing a couple of tests to make sure the space would work for what they needed.
The LED lights feeding the one square metre area of greens in the tunnels are energy efficient and last for nine years. But Dring and Ballard need money to increase their production to fill the 10,000 square metres of growing space and hire up to 20 more people.
