“Remember, remember the fifth of November, gunpowder, treason (叛国), and plot.” So go the words to a famous nursery rhyme in the United Kingdom, sung by children to remember one of the UKs traditional festivals: Guy Fawkes Night.
Also known as “fireworks night”, its a British celebration with a deep history. The celebration traces its origins back to Nov. 5, 1605, when a small group of people who disliked the English King James Ⅰ decided to blow up parliament (议会) while he was attending.
As an expert on explosives, Guy Fawkes filled barrels (桶) with gunpowder, which would be secretly placed under parliament, in preparation for the kings arrival. However, their plan was found out and the king was saved. After the failure of the plot, bonfires were lit around the country in celebration. This tradition has continued every year since.
At large outdoor gatherings, people collect wood and then set it alight, gathering around to enjoy the fun. Its also a tradition to create a “Guy”: a dummy (仿造物) of Guy Fawkes, made of old clothes and filled with straw. The figure is then thrown on the fire as onlookers celebrate.
Besides, “guy” an expression for a person whos usually male may have its origins in this festival. Its believed the word may have first been used as slang (俚语), implying that a poorly⁃dressed person looks like a Guy Fawkes Night dummy.
Although it has increasingly been overshadowed (使显得逊色) by Halloween, Guy Fawkes Night still has a valuable place in British culture. I have great memories of watching fireworks with my family as a child on those nights and hope kids in the future will have their own wonderful memories to one day look back on as well.
