It's a school day morning. You are dressing yourself in the bedroom and reminding yourself to take
your backpack from the living room. But as you walk through your bedroom door and into the living
room, you suddenly forget why you went there.
Most people would worry about their bad memory. But scientists believe the act of walking through
doorways makes us forget things. They call it the“doorway effect(门口s效应)”.
Scientists from the University of Notre Dame in America did a study. They placed several objects
into two rooms. Some students were asked to put an object from Room A into a shoebox and then carry it
to Room B through a doorway. In Room B.they exchanged it for another object and brought it back to
Room A with the shoebox. For comparison, the students were also asked to do the same task without
crossing a doorway.
During the process, scientists asked the students which object was in their shoebox, finding that the
students'answers were slower and less correct after they walked through a doorway and into a new
room.
"Entering through a doorway serves as a 'dividing line'in the mind,"scientist Gabriel
Radvansky said.Setting "dividing lines"in our mind helps us organize information in the brain, but it
can also cause us to forget things. For example, when you walk into the living room, your brain thinks a
task is done and moves on,though it isn't sure whether the done task is the one you want to do finally.
Is there a way to stop the doorway effect?Writing down what you need to do before going into
another room might work well.
