But recently, it has caught uncommon attention: It can be a sign of catching COVID-19. Whatever the cause, here are some things you should remember if you develop a fever. Don’t have certain drinks. Alcohol (酒精), soda (苏打) and caffeinated (含咖啡因的) drinks should be avoided when you have a fever. They can cause your body to lose water when it really needs a lot of water. Do not dress too warmly or put yourself in a place that is too hot. This can influence the body’s ability to regulate (调节) its temperature and make your fever worse. Don’t double your medicines. The old saying “Those with a cold should eat, while those with a fever should eat nothing” is wrong and dangerous. Fever speeds up your metabolism (新陈代谢), so you need to get more energy from food. Hunger also reduces the body’s ability to fight off disease. Don’t forget to drink water. A fever will increase the number of breaths, causing water loss. The body also sweats more as it regulates its temperature. What’s more, people usually drink less water when they have a fever, which finally cause the body to lose water faster.
