3. Why do scientists often need to go to great lengths to effectively combine nature and innovation?
Read paragraph 1 and 2 and answer the following questions.
1. What is the definition of bionics?
2. When does the term “bionics” date from?
Bionics is a science of taking inspiration from nature, which effectively combines nature and innovation to improve our lives.
It officially dates back to 1958, but the practice is centuries old, dating back as far as 2,500 years.
Because the process of the study involves four stages, which may have to be performed several times and it may take scientists years of trial and error to perfect the product.
◆ Present applications
Taking inspiration from plants
One idea grew from observing (1) _____________________________. The seeds grow at the “golden angle” of 137.5°, ensuring all of them receive sunlight. (2) __________________________, the sunflower’s face also follows the sun’s path.
Solar mirrors are arranged to (3) ________________________ and positioned at the same “golden angle”. The mirrors are also programmed to follow the sun.
Applications of bionics
