Who was Ernest Shackleton? Why did he put such an advertisement?
Shackleton, born in 1874 in Ireland, before captaining the ship Endurance, accompanied Robert Scott on the Discovery expedition and also led the Nimrod expedition, both of which went to Antarctica. Although the Endurance expedition was a failure, there was no loss of life, thanks to Shackleton’s daring rescue mission. He is celebrated as one of the world’s greatest explorers, and the Endurance expedition story is said by many to be the greatest rescue mission of all time.
