——改编自How Often Should You Replace Your Kitchen Sponge?
【文章】
Have you ever thought about the germs in your kitchen sponge? Yes, it cleans your dishes and counters, but it's also wiping jelly off your kid's face. In reality, all those little holes in the sponge can harbor food and germs, and the warm water can help them grow. One study has even found up to 45 million bacteria in only 1 square centimeter of a kitchen sponge, made up of 362 different species of bacteria. While most of those won't make you sick, it's still not an appetizing thought.
So, when is it time to toss that sponge? Most experts recommend throwing it away after a week or two at most. You can tell if it's time to replace your sponge by looking at it and smelling it. If there are bits of food or spills remaining, it's time to get rid of it.
But what if you want to clean your sponge instead of replacing it so quickly? Well, microwaving it for two minutes will kill some germs, but it won't eliminate them all. The best methods are to run the sponge through the dishwasher on the top rack, including the dry cycle, or soaking the sponge in a solution of 1/2 teaspoon of bleach in 1 quart of water.
Keeping your kitchen and household clean is essential to maintain good health, but it's easy to might overlook items like sponges when cleaning. By understanding how much bacteria can be lurking in a kitchen sponge, and how to keep it clean, we can better protect ourselves and our families from harmful germs. Remember, prevention is always better than cure.
