Taking Street Dance to Campus
Scientists depend on facts. Theymust be serious about their researchand make sure their findings are basedon facts. You probably didn’t know thatone field also requires a degree ofauthenticity: hip-hop.
The University of Chinese Academyof Sciences (UCAS) is widely seen as aplace for talented people in science andtechnology. It may seem like an unlikelyplace for hip-hop, yet a group ofstudents there are sharing their pursuit of authenticity in both scientificresearch and hip-hop dance.
These students started a dance clubcalled HD Crew. On weekends, theyenjoy several hours away from theirstudy and research plans, travelingacross the city to meet at a dance studio.
“Dance helps me relax after a stressful week of study,” says Hu Weimin, 26, a member of HD Crew. “These dance lovers encouraged me todance with confidence.”
Lin Jinyi, another HD Crew member, says,“After I joined HD Crew, I foundthat there are so many others at ouruniversity who have the same passion for dance as me. I have a strongsense of belonging here.”
Last year, for the first time, theywere invited to join a talent show,Campus. The show invited 20 danceclubs from universities around China togo through rounds ofcompetitions. Thestudents’performancesexpressed their understanding of a greatnumber of things in life, including school, environmental protection, classic moviesand Chinese culture.
Although it seems that hip-hop hasnothing to do with science, the“keep itreal”value helps the students with boththeir studies and life.
