A New York woman just happened to be in the right place at the right time to save an injured swan(受伤的天鹅).
The day before her 30th birthday, Ariel headed out(前往)for some bird watching at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge in Queens. She had no idea how her day would go. Suddenly, she noticed a big swan that seemed to be injured. She decided to go closer for a better look.
Ariel works as an animal care manager at the Wild Bird Fund, an organization(组织)that helps birds and other wildlife in Manhattan. She has lots of training experience(培训经验)in wildlife rescue(救援). So she is no stranger to dealing with sick and injured birds.
Thanks to her experience with birds, Ariel knew she had to get the swan to the Wild Bird Fund as soon as possible. She wrapped(裹) it in her jacket and walked back to where she left her bicycle. Since the Wild Bird Fund was many miles away, she began planning her journey.
Along the way, Ariel got help from some kind strangers who drove her, her bike and the swan to a nearby subway station. At the end of the 23-mile journey, she was happy to hand the swan over to her workmates at the Wild Bird Fund for treatment(治疗).The bird was lucky that Ariel happened to be nearby when it needed help, but Ariel believed rescuing the swan was a perfect way to spend her time. “It was the perfect birthday gift to be in nature and be able to save a life,” she said.
