Ⅰ.完形填空
(2023·惠州市二模)One morning in November 2020, my friend Liz and I took out our kayak (皮划艇) to watch the humpback whales (座头鲸) while they're migrating passing San Luis Obispo, California. We were in awe: to be so close to a(n) __1__ that size.
When whales left, we __2__ them at a distance — or what we thought was a(n)__3__ distance. Suddenly, I felt the kayak lift out of the water and ___4__ back into the ocean. I figured the whale was going to __5__ us down somehow, and I had no idea how __6__ we'd be sucked underwater.
What I didn't realize then was that Liz and I were in the whale's __7__. It had covered my entire body except for my right arm. I was __8__. Liz, meanwhile, was looking up into the whale's jaw which was like a big white wall, thinking she was going to __9__.
Anything whales can't __10__, they spit out, for they have huge mouths but tiny throats. Soon we both were __11__ out of the water about a metre apart.
A few days later, I __12__ the video shot by the nearby people and saw how close I'd come to being killed. I became so much more __13__ of life after that day. There's no __14__ to get close to whales again. I want to respect their __15__. I'm now very aware of the power of nature and the ocean.
