Understanding and Coping with Stress
Level: High school
Duration: 50 minutes
Objectives:
Students will understand the concept of stress and its effects on the body and mind.
Students will identify the sources of stress in their lives and learn effective coping strategies.
Materials:
Whiteboard and markers
Handout with a list of stressors
Access to the internet and a projector for videos
Warm-up (5 minutes):
Ask students to share a time when they felt stressed and what caused it.
Write their answers on the board.
Ask students what they did to cope with their stress.
Introduction (10 minutes):
Define stress for the students and explain the different types of stress.
Explain how stress can affect the body and mind.
Introduce the handout with a list of stressors.
Instruct the students to work in pairs and discuss the stressors on the handout and how they have experienced them.
Activity (25 minutes):
Show the students a video about stress and its effects on the body and mind.
After the video, ask the students to discuss their reactions to the information presented.
Repeat the process with two or three different videos.
After the videos, ask each pair to share their findings and present the stressor they found most challenging.
Wrap-up (10 minutes):
Ask students to reflect on their own stressors and how they cope with them.
Ask students to share their thoughts with the class.
Summarize the coping strategies discussed in class.
Conclude the lesson by reminding students that stress is a normal part of life, and there are effective ways to cope with it.
Assessment:
Observe student participation and engagement during the pair discussions and video activities.
Evaluate the quality of the students' presentations on the stressors they found most challenging.
Assign a written reflection for homework where students must discuss their own stressors and coping strategies.
