Nontzikelelo grew up in the eastern part of Bakersfield, which was the only area where Black families were allowed to live at that time.Today, the area is predominantly populated by low-income people of color, who are forced to breathe in the fine particle air pollution that is caused by the oilwells,freeways,pesticide-choked agricultural fields, and the rail yard that ships the valley's produce around the nation. According to an analysis conducted by The Guardian in collaboration with academics, people of color are often the ones who are forced to live in areas with the worst fine particle air pollution across the United States. The analysis, which used a model created by a team of researchers from the University of Washington and other institutions, revealed that the more people of color who live in a neighborhood, the higher the fine particulate air pollution levels are likely to be.Professor Robert Bullard, who helped start the environmental justice movement, believes that systemic racism is the underlying variable that is most predictive of air pollution levels in neighborhoods with higher populations of people of color. Nontzikelelo's experience is not unique. The lifetime exposure to Bakersfield's air has left her struggling with respiratory problems, and she often has to temporarily move away from the area to regain her health. The Clean Air Act has led to significant improvements in air quality over the last five decades, but studies by environmental researchers have shown that a significant gap persists in air pollution levels experienced by people of different races. The Guardian has created an interactive map that allows Americans to see the estimated pollution levels
