All skin colours come from melanin (黑色素).Our body makes melanin to protect our skin from the sun. People with more melanin are darker and those with less are lighter. People in hot areas developed(生长)more melanin because dark skin helped protect against the sun and skin cancer. In colder countries, people developed lighter skin because they did not face the same kind of pressure to protect themselves from the sun. If your parents came from sunny places you were born with more melanin and darker skin. If your parents came from less sunny places, you were born with less melanin and lighter skin. Put a bandage around your finger on a sunny day. Take it off a few days later. Did that part of your finger make any melanin? No! The bandage blocked the sun from the skin. When sunlight hits your skin, melanin comes to protect it, and gives you a tan.
