Use the whiteboard to write down their responses and ask follow-up questions to gauge their prior knowledge. (suggested Qs below) 1) Have you ever celebrated Chinese New Year or any other cultural celebration? 2) Do you know the meaning and significance of Chinese New Year? 3) What do you know about Chinese culture, traditions and customs? 4) What do you know about the Chinese zodiac and the Year of the Ox? 5) Have you ever heard of or eaten any of the Chinese New Year food mentioned in the article? 6) Do you know the importance of family and generational relationships in Chinese culture? Introduce the topic and objectives of the lesson. Reading and Discussion (25-30 minutes) Distribute copies of the article "Chinese New Year: Celebrating Family, Tradition, and Culture" to the students and allow them time to read it.
