Two of them are short stories, one is a lecture and another one is a short article. Content 1: The gifts It’s a short story about the gift-giving between Della and Jim. They both sold their most valuable possessions to buy gifts for each other. It helps students understand surprise endings and appreciate the true love and sacrifice of people. Content 2: The life of O.Henry It’s a listening material which introduces the life of O.Henry which can activate Ss’ background information about the writer and lay a foundation for further reading. Content 3:The most valuable gift It’s a short article about the most valuable gift Jimmy has ever received. The article has a clear structure which can enable Ss to connect themselves to personal experience. Content 4: The last leaf It’s a short story about an old man Behrman sacrificed himself to draw a leaf on the wall to encourage Johnsy to live, which enable Ss to further appreciate surprise ending and sacrifice spirit.
