My personal relationship with Steve began when I was an 18-year-old college student. As I was a great lover of fruits, I often went to the Davis Farmers Market in California’s Central Valley to buy fresh fruits. At the market I could come face to face with some of the highest quality fruit on the planet and the experts who grew it. Once when I was there, I saw a man shouting, loud and excited, and I realized he was shouting at me, demanding I try his peaches.

That was how I got to know Steve, a fruit farmer who was selling wonderful peaches grown on his own farm. We had a chat about fruits and we felt like friends. Steve invited me to work part-time on his farm and I agreed. I would pick, prune (修剪), and run after birds, and I was paid in cash and fruit. About a year later my roommate observed that I might be addicted to fruit. I’d regularly come home from Steve’s farm with dozens of pounds of peaches, cherries, and apples.

When I was to graduate, Steve offered me a full-time job to drive a truck and sell fruit at Northern California farmers’ markets. But I turned him down. I wanted to be a news reporter.

While working as a reporter, I happened to read in an old book that Fairchild, a late 19th-century food spy, traveled the world to find crops that didn’t exist in the U.S. He was the man who brought America its first avocados, kale, and mangoes, and he helped to get the famous cherry blossom trees in Washington D.C.For three years I combed Fairchild’s diaries and his travel journals. And I sat up all night reading his century-old writings.

An Encounter in a Department Store

Candle holders, picture frames and so on surrounded me in a household goods store. While my husband and I waited for construction to be finished in our new house, I enjoyed seeking page number 0

decorating ideas. A figurine on one of the shelves attracted my attention, and I picked it up. It was beautiful, made of cast bronze. A woman was dancing with a young girl, their faces caught in a moment of pure joy, and the girl looked up lovely at what could only be her mother.

Memories flooded in I remembered my daughter, Laura, my son, Glenn, and me dancing around the living room. I was a nurse, which meant long shifts at the hospital, so I cherished these moments with my kids. “Having so fun,” as Laura used to say.

I could see both of my children now — Glenn dancing to the record player as Laura spun round and round. Time had passed in the blink of an eye. Now my husband and I were moving out of the house they’d grown up in. Laura has children of her own and works as a designer. Glenn also works in a design company.

I had to buy it, and knew just where I’d put it in the new house. It would be put on the side of the fireplace in the living room. Only one thing could make my purchase more perfect: if this figurine were part of a set, the other piece of a mother dancing with a boy. It was possible I’d find one.

Determined, I searched the entire store. I carefully scanned every shelf. There was no companion figurine anywhere, nor a salesperson to help me. Maybe the cashier will know, I thought. I headed to the registers. As I stood in the checkout line, I spotted an older woman walking quickly with something like a figurine in one of her hands.

I was at Lens Crafters waiting to pick up my new pair of glasses. A mom as well as her little girl walked in. The mom was probably in her late twenties and the little girl was about five.

Both of their clothes were badly dated to say the least. It was obvious that the family’s financial windfall (意外之财) had not yet arrived. I overheard a comment the comment made to the saleslady that she was in between job 1 and job 2 of the day, so she didn't have a lot of time.

The little girl and the mom proceeded around the store looking at these little tiny frames for the girl’s face. The saleslady was helping them try on frames and pulling aside her favorites.page number 1

You knew how some little kids actually looked ten times cuter in glasses, and so the little girl did. She found these cute little frames with a butterfly on them. She was so happy, smiling from ear to ear while she looked at herself in the mirror.

The saleslady rang the glasses up on the till (收银台). The mom pulled out a coupon (优惠券), and the saleslady stared blankly at the coupon. She then explained that for some reason this coupon could not be used, pointing out the miniscule (极小的) words printed at the bottom.

Then the mom chatted back and forth for a bit with the saleslady and then finally leaned down to her daughter and explained to her that there would be no glasses that day, maybe next month she said.

The little girl’s eyes started to tear up. The mom leaned a little closer and told her it would be OK and that she needed a little more time to save up for them. The little girl responded, “But Mommy, I can’t see and I want to be able to see when I start school next week. I want to do well, Mommy! What if I’m in the back?”

Ollie Simmons was good at maths, but Ruby Riley wasn’t. Well, Ruby didn’t think she was. She sat next to Ollie and so she just copied him. This was the best way she had found to do maths and she didn’t have to think at all.

One day the teacher said, “We will be having a maths test after lunch.” Ruby felt there was a moth moving its wings inside her. “Can I copy off you?” she whispered to Ollie. Ollie thought for a minute. “What will you give me?” he whispered back. Ruby showed Ollie a stone she had. It was round and smooth and the colour of the sea. “OK!” he said, “Give me the stone, and then you can copy me.” Ollie Simmons got one hundred percent in the maths test and so did Ruby. Their names went on the top of the maths champs chart.

Every week there was a maths test and every week Ollie Simmons and Ruby Riley got one page number 2
