Born in Ningbo in 1930, Tu Youyou graduated from Peking University. In 1967, she was chosen to join a team of scientists with the objective of discovering a new treatment for malaria. Her team examined many old medical texts, and evaluated lots of plants for their medical properties. From their research, they found a substance that worked. They even insisted on testing the medicine on themselves to make sure that it was safe. Finally the medicine, which was called artemisinin, soon became a standard treatment for malaria and saved thousands of lives. Tu Youyou’s work is so important that the Nobel Prize of 2015 was awarded to her. Tu Youyou, who is not interested in fame, said it was a team effort.
