Writing Workshop A Formal Email
Teaching Objective:
•To read and talk about writing a formal email
•To read for writing
•To summarize information
•To write a formal email to ask for more information
Difficult points:
· Students will need time to write their email.
· Students may struggle with sentence construction, grammar and spelling.
Process:
Step 1:
Get Ready for Writing
Look at the advertisement on a school website. Choose one activity that you'd like to know more about and write an email to ask for more information. Decide whether it is going to be formal or informal.
· Read aloud the rubric, and volunteer students can read each advertisement. Explain any difficult words or terminology.
· Ask students: Which advertisement would you like to sign up for? Why? What additional information would you ask for? Ensure that all students have a chance to take part in the class discussion and that all the advertisements have been discussed.
· Explain that students will mind map their chosen advertisement and the additional information and questions that they would want to know.
Step 2:
Read for Writing
Read the email on page 19. Answer the questions.
· Volunteer students read the email on page 19. Explain any difficult words or terminology.
· Ask the students: Who is the email from? How do you know this? Who is the email addressed to? How do you know this? What is the subject of the email? What information does the student want to find out?
· Explain the components of an email: From:, To:, Subject, salutation, body, closing, etc.
· While you read the email aloud again, students underline key words in the email.
· Students answer the questions in pairs.
Step 3:
Focus on Structure and Language
Ⅰ. Read the email again. Identify its structure and useful language. Complete the table.
· Read the rubric and discuss the table. What is the structure and purpose of each paragraph?
