The attacks knocked out half of Saudi Arabia’s production capacity and 5 percent of daily global oil production. Brent crude, the global benchmark for purchases of oil worldwide, has seen its biggest jump of more than $12 a barrel in about 30 years. The offensive has come just as Aramco was preparing for what was expected to be the world’s largest IPO. The Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen have claimed responsibility for the strikes, warning that more expanded attacks are in the offing. A Saudi-UAE-led coalition has been in a tussle with the Houthis since March 2015 to restore the rule of Yemeni President Abd Rabbu Mansour Hadi. Upwards of 60,000 people have been killed so far and 12 million people are at the risk of starvation. The US has alleged the active involvement of the dispensation in Iran as the attacks exceed the Houthis’ capabilities. Satellite pictures too, have dismissed the stemming of attacks from Yemen.
