4 History and Traditions
Road is stepped out①,and history is written. Every step of man is writing his own history.
Few will have the greatness②to bend history itself, but each of us can work to change a small portion of events, and in the total, of all those acts will be written the history of this generation③.
Yet if the only form of tradition, of handing down, consisted in following the ways of the immediate generation before us in a blind or timid adherence④ to its successes, “tradition” should positively be discouraged⑤. We have seen many such simple currents soon lost in the sand, and novelty is better than repetition. Tradition is a matter of much wider significance. It cannot be inherited⑥, and if you want it you must obtain it by great labour. It involves, in the first place, the historical sense, which we may call nearly indispensable to anyone who would continue to be a poet beyond his twentyfifth year, and the historical sense involves a perception⑦, not only of the pastness of the past, but of its presence.
—Tradition and the Individual Talent
China was the first country to experiment with chopsticks nearly 3,000 years ago. But at that time, they weren't used as eating utensils. The Chinese used them for cooking since they could safely put them into boiling pots of water. Over time, chopsticks has developed a lot and been widely used beyond China.
