The Little Prince
1 Once when I was six years old I saw a magnificent① picture in a book, called True Stories from Nature, about the primeval② forest. It was a picture of a boa constrictor③ in the act of swallowing an animal④. Here is a copy of the drawing.
2 In the book it said:“Boa constrictors swallow⑤ their prey⑥ whole, without chewing⑦ it. After that they are not able to move, and they sleep through⑧ the six months that they need for digestion⑨.”
3 I ponderedB10 deeply, then, over the adventures of the jungle. And after some work with a colored pencil I succeeded in making my first drawing. My Drawing Number One. It looked like this:

But since the grownups were not able to understand it, I made another drawing: I drew the inside of the boa constrictor, so that the grownups could see it clearly.【2】 They always need to have things explained【3】. 【3】画线部分是“have+宾语+过去分词”结构。have是使役动词,意为“使……”。
7 The grownups' response, this time, was to advise me to lay aside⑬ my drawings of boa constrictors, whether from the inside or the outside, and devote myself instead to⑭ geography, history, arithmetic⑮ and grammar. That is why, at the age of six, I gave up what might have been a magnificent career as a painter.【4】 I had been disheartened⑯ by the failure of my Drawing Number One and my Drawing Number Two. Grownups never understand anything by themselves, and it is tiresome⑰ for children to be always and forever explaining things to them【5】.
【4】本句是主从复合句。why在此引导表语从句,从句中包含一个what引导的宾语从句,what在宾语从句中作主语。
【5】画线部分是“it is+adj.+(for sb.)to do sth.”结构,it是形式主语,真正的主语是后面的
