1. (21年丰台区高二期末)
It was the day of the school swimming competition and I was very scared. I did not want to swim. I could swim, not very well, and I didn't want people to see me splashing about and looking silly. However, the biggest problem was that I was scared that I would come last and make a fool of myself.
There were two teams in our school. Green and Red. I was in the Red Team and I didn't want us to lose. In each swimming race, there were eight swimmers—four for each team. The teams won points depending on how their swimmers performed.
It was two minutes before the start of the race. The swimmers in the race were walking down to the race start area. If there were seven other swimmers, surely it would not be a big deal for me to miss it. I was only going to come last anyway. So I decided to slip away—just disappear—and the best place to hide was in the changing room. Quietly and quickly, I made my way there.
I heard them calling my name on the loudspeaker, “Will the last swimmer for the Red Team please come down? Will Christine please come to the starting block?” I was so embarrassed that I hid behind the shower curtain!
Then the cheering started. Thank goodness that the race was away and I was safe!
When it was over, I went back to the seating area. A scowling (怒视) and angry teacher stopped me. She said, “Christine, you have cost the Red Team ten points. A ‘no-show’ is a ten-point penalty (惩罚)!”
It was a tight competition but the Red Team lost that day by six points. If I had just gotten into the water and swum, even if I came last, we would have won.
I never will forget that day. Not taking part, being too scared to give it a go, meant my whole team lost. From that day on I decided I would always give something a try, even if I was scared.
